In the 90’s, English girl group Spice Girls reigned the pop charts all across the world. In their short-lived tenure as a group, they found success with only three full-length studio albums and one compilation album. Their debut album Spice sold more than 31 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by a female group in history. Their follow-up album Spiceworld sold over 20 million copies worldwide. The Spice Girls have sold 85 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling female group of all time, one of the best-selling pop groups of all time.
The group was made up of singers Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice), Emma Bunton (aka Baby Spice), Melanie Brown (aka Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (aka Sporty Spice), and Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice). All five ladies were involved with the first two albums, but Halliwell left the group before the third album. She had decided to pursue a solo career instead. Since the departure of the group, each member has since released a variety of solo projects. I will do a separate article on their individual contributions to music and the dance genre in particular.
During their years together, the Spice Girls celebrated a collective number 1 on nearly every pop chart in the world with their debut single, “Wannabe.” They also racked up a total of eight US Billboard Top 100 hits, as well as six US Dance Club hits. Their biggest dance club single reached #4, which is my personal favorite by the ladies, “Spice Up Your Life.” It even charted a second time in 2008, with the 2008 remixes. “Wannabe” also charted a second time with 2008 remixes.
