En Vogue became an instant success in 1990 with their debut hit, “Hold On.” The quartet took that single all the way to #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and #1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. They had two more singles reach the #2 spot on the Hot 100, just missing the top spot, but they managed to rack up six #1 singles over on the R&B Singles chart. They’ve also accumulated seven charted singles on the Dance Club Songs chart, and have released two remix albums for their dance music fans.
The original lineup of En Vogue consisted of singers Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, and Dawn Robinson. Before the release of their third album, Dawn left the group resulting in the ladies becoming a trio, and cleverly calling their new album EV3. After their fourth album, Maxine left the group. Rhona Bennett joined the remaining ladies to work on recording their next album, and the three have been a trio every since. However, on a nice side note: In October 2019, original members Dawn and Maxine reunited with Terry, Cindy, and Rhona for an on-stage performance to salute music industry executive Sylvia Rhone at the City of Hope Gala 2019. This marked the first time all five members have ever performed together.
In December 1999, Billboard magazine ranked the ladies as the 19th most successful recording artist of the 1990s. They also ranked as the second most successful female group of the 1990s. And in March 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the ninth most-successful girl group of all-time. Two of the group’s singles ranks in Billboard’s most successful girl group songs of all-time list, “Don’t Let Go (Love)” (#12) and “Hold On” (#23).
