The year was 1985 when Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam first collaborated. Lisa Lisa, aka Lisa Velez, together with Mike Hughes and Alex “Spanador” Moseley of Cult Jam, created one of the most influential freestyle music sounds of the 80s. They released their debut single, “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” and it climbed all the way to #1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The group continued to rack up more dance hits, along with two more chart toppers, “Head To Toe” and “Let The Beat Hit ‘Em.”
The group disbanded after just six years and four albums. However, Lisa Lisa went on to record and release two solo albums. Hughes and Moseley went on to do other projects. To this day, Lisa Lisa still performs on various freestyle concerts, and I had the great fortune of seeing her in 2016 at the Super Freestyle Explosion Concert in Orlando Florida.
Rumor has it, that in June of 2019, Lisa Lisa signed with Snoop Dogg’s Army, part of the Snoop Dogg Entertainment Company. So let’s hope this means there will be some new music on the horizon. (Crossing fingers)
