Roxette is a duo from Sweden, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. They were each well known musicians in Sweden, but it wasn’t until three years after forming the band that they became an international success. Their first major hit was “The Look,” which hit #1 in multiple countries, including the US. Together, they achieved four #1 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Two of Roxette’s biggest songs, “It Must Have Been Love” and “Listen to Your Heart,” received awards from BMI for achieving five million radio plays. They have sold an estimated 75 million records worldwide, with over 10 million in certified units from Germany, the US and the UK, achieving gold and platinum certifications for Joyride and Look Sharp! in all three regions. They are Sweden’s second-best-selling music act after ABBA.
It was in 2002 that Marie was diagnosed with a brain tumor, so the band decided to take a break from recording and touring. Per went on to release solo albums and reunited with his former band, Gyllene Tider. It wasn’t until seven years later that Roxette reunited and started recording new music. They released three more full-length albums, and even though the duo planned to release more studio material after 2016’s Good Karma, Marie’s health continued to dwindle. Sadly, she passed away on December 9th of 2019. RIP Marie.
