I have been a La Bouche fan since I can remember. The fantastically attractive duo with a musical connection that just blends perfectly together. Lane McCray, the male singer/rapper, along with Melanie Thornton, the powerhouse female vocalist, gave birth to the sound of Euro-dance in the US during the 90’s dance music phenomenon. Before most online streaming services, I was always hunting for other artists who had the sound of La Bouche. I became fans of other European acts assimilating the sound, but there was still only one La Bouche.
I had the fortune of Melanie and Lane perform live at a dance club called The Electric Ballroom in Knoxville TN. Melanie brought the ballroom down with her delivery of such beautiful and strong vocals. She could literally just open her mouth and an amazing sound would appear. Sadly, while flying from a gig in Germany to another one in Switzerland, to promote her new solo album and single, her plane went down and she did not survive the crash. It was such a devastation, I remember crying for days and weeks. It was also disturbing due to the fact that it happened just a month after the 9/11 terrorist attack in the US in 2001. I still miss her tremendously, and celebrate her life every year.
Since her passing, Lane continued to tour and keep Melanie’s memory alive. For the female vocal performances, he started using Kayo Shekoni. Kayo was one half of another Euro-dance band called Le Click. Ironically enough, Melanie provided vocals on the first single by Le Click before joining La Bouche. Lane recorded some solo material for the next decade, and most recently decided to record new material as La Bouche. This time around, he brought in another amazing female vocalist, Sophie Cairo. Sophie is a great addition to a duo that has always had a special place in my heart.
