Kylie Minogue has just released her twelfth studio album, Kiss Me Once. Given the amount of time she took to work on this album, I was hoping it would match the incredible momentum of her previous effort Aphrodite. But alas, after listening to it in it’s entirety, I feel that it doesn’t quite match the success. I want so badly to love it, simply because it is Kylie, but I’m not loving it as much as Aphrodite. Obviously, working with new producers always opens the door to new sounds and possibilities, so the dance vibe on this album is a little bit different. Stuart Price helped create some of the magic from Aphrodite, but for Kiss Me Once she worked with a variety of new producers. She recently mentioned in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine that she wanted to move the goalpost and experiment with different sounds on this album. This is also her first album under new management Roc Nation, owned by rapper Jay-Z.
There are some decent dance tracks on the album, such as “Into The Blue,” “Million Miles” and “Fine,” but several tracks on the album could have easily been left off without making an impact. Despite throwing us a small curveball with her sound, it’s not a bad effort overall. My only problem is the fact that I’ve grown accustomed to superb Kylie quality dance songs. So in my opinion, Kylie sets the bar so high that I expect amazing things from her at all times. Perhaps some big-name DJ’s can give a few of these tunes a finer tune-up. Naturally, the singles will include a variety of remixes for club play, so there’s my light at the end of the tunnel.
My biggest disappointment is the duet with Enrique Iglesias, titled “Beautiful.” I have been looking forward to hearing this one for weeks after I saw the tracklist on iTunes. Bringing two dance artists together, I initially thought it would be a dance track collaboration. Sadly, it is a ballad. But just as the name implies, it’s a beautiful song with some very heartfelt lyrics. So I’m going to let this one grow on me because there’s no denying that I would kiss the ground that both Kylie and Enrique walk upon.
Following the release of “Into The Blue,” a new video was just finished for the song “Sexercize.” It may very well give Olivia Newton John’s “Lets Get Physical” a run for her gym membership fee.
